According to a new study of cannabis workers in Colorado, there is “an imminent need” for the marijuana industry “to establish formal health and safety training to implement best practices.”

The study, conducted by researchers with the department of psychology at Colorado State University, found that roughly 46% of respondents reported receiving little to no safety training since they started working in the cannabis space.

The researchers surveyed 214 Colorado cannabis industry workers who are in daily contact with marijuana and cannabis products.

The study was partially funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health at the Centers for Disease Control.

The Atlanta-based public health institute is under the Department of Health and Human Services.

According to the Colorado State researchers, the report was a “first-of-its-kind, peer-reviewed study that examined the demographics, physical environment and psychosocial aspects of working in the cannabis industry.”

The study results were published in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine.
