Here’s a very simple recipe for making cannabis (weed) infused sugar! Canna sugar, (also known as weed, marijuana or pot infused sugar), can be used just like real sugar easily making just about anything medicated! Stir a spoonful into your coffee or tea, add to your favorite cookie or candy recipe, the choices are endless!
It is best to try this cannasugar recipe with some fresh, good quality cannabis. Experimenting with different strains will produce sugars with unique flavors that can be tailored to your needs. If you are in a legal state and have a medical marijuana card, you can easily buy a gram or 2 of a few different strains to see which you like the most.
This cannasugar recipe easily scales up or down, so feel free to make as much as you want! Potency can be reduced for those wanting less, simply use either less cannabis to fit your personal needs. You can also experiment with different strains which can add their own flavors and aromas to your final product.
Sugar does not dissolve very well in high proof alcohols. You can remedy this by making a quick syrup of sugar and water and then adding the alcohol to that. (This is my preferred method.) The only downside is that drying can take a bit longer due to the water content.
Sugar will dissolve much better in alcohol that has a higher water content (i.e. lower proof). Higher proof alcohols will do a better extraction of the cannabis versus the lower proof alcohols, and will not get as green.
If you don’t care about the color you can do the extraction for the cannasugar recipe with a lower proof. You can also minimize the color by water curing your flower first. Keep your cannasugar stored in an airtight container in a cool dark place and it will probably last forever.
Need to make your extract first? Here are 2 methods to create cannabis extracts using either Isopropyl Alcohol or Ethanol. If you are making this to use in this canna sugar recipe, I would only use the Ethanol QWET method. QWET – Easy 3-minute Quick Wash Ethanol Extraction
This one is for the ISO extraction: QWISO – Easy 3 Minute Quick Wash ISO Extraction
Canna Sugar Recipe Ingredients
- 1/8 oz. (3.5gr) cannabis flowers, coarsely chopped
- 1/2 cup (100gr) white sugar or turbinado sugar
- 2/3 cup (150ml) [wpdiscuz-feedback id=”h92fe7zofu” question=”What flavors have you tried? Let us know!” opened=”0″]Any drinkable alcohol – you can get creative with flavors! -> [/wpdiscuz-feedback]
**Do Not Use Isopropyl Alcohol in your cannasugar recipe**
DIRECTIONS
- The day before you plan to make your canna sugar recipe, place the alcohol in the freezer and let it sit overnight.
- Preheat your oven to 250 degrees F (120C). Place your coarsely chopped cannabis in a small shallow dish, like a pie plate (glass if you have it). Cover tightly with 2 layers of aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes. Remove and allow to cool completely.
- Transfer the now decarboxylated flower into a Mason jar. Pour the alcohol in to the jar and ensure the cannabis is completely covered.
- Put the lid on the jar and swirl gently to agitate. Place the jar in the freezer for 10 minutes, gently swirling to mix every 2 minutes.
- After 10 minutes, remove the jar from the freezer and strain through a coffee filter into the clean pie plate you used previously.
- Add the sugar and stir until completely dissolved.* Alternatively, you can combine the alcohol mixture and the sugar in the cleaned Mason jar and then pour the resulting mixture into the shallow dish.
- Place the pie plate on an electric griddle with the temperature set to low. Alternatively, you can use a heating pad. Using a small fan to provide good air circulation, let the mixture sit undisturbed until no more alcohol remains. You can always feel free to just let it sit and evaporate on its own as well if you’re not in a hurry.
- Gather the remaining cannabis infused sugar from the dish making sure to break up larger pieces. 30 seconds with a mortar & pestle or a few pulses in a blender will break up any lumps if you want.
- Store the sugar in an airtight storage container until ready for use.
* Sugar does not dissolve very well in high proof Ethanol, like Everclear. To speed up the process, you can dissolve the sugar in an equal part of water until a syrup is formed. Then mix the syrup with the alcohol.
DOSING
3.5gr of cannabis containing 25% THC will yield approximately 800mg of THC in your final product. This recipe will yield about 25-30 teaspoons of canna sugar, giving it an average THC content of approximately 20-25mg per tsp. Make sure you measure your batch to see exactly how much you have before performing the potency calculation.
If you do not know the THC percentage of your flower, you would need to either use the average THC content of the strain and hope you are close or purchase a home cannabis testing device to test for thc potency.
PRO TIPS
- Remember, Ethanol vapors are extremely flammable and are heavier than air. Avoid sources of ignition. Using a gas oven is not recommended due to the potential for fire or explosion.
- A note on grinding: grinding your flower finely will produce a much greener looking and tasting sugar. To avoid this, simply break the buds apart with your fingers into pea sized pieces.
- Save the leftover buds! There’s still some cannabinoids present in them. Let them air dry and they can be used for infusing coconut oil, or simply grind them up and put into gelcaps for consumption.
- You can use Freeze Dried Cannabis in this recipe as well. Read about our recommended freeze dryer for freeze dryer weed.
Want an even cleaner look and taste?
Water Cure your flower first! After decarbing your flower in the oven, put it into a mason jar and fill with reverse-osmosis distilled water. Place the jar in the refrigerator. When the water begins to darken from the color leeching out of the buds, gently empty the colored liquid and replace with clean water; at least once a day.
Continue this process until color no longer leeches out of the buds. Depending on numerous factors, this process can take anywhere from 3-12 days. Once achieved, dry your cannabis using any quick dry method you prefer. Water curing removes all the water-soluble material from the plant leaving you some rather dull, lifeless looking buds. That’s OK though, its now even more potent by weight due to the loss of extraneous materials you didn’t want in your cannasugar recipe.
Using water cured flower in your cannasugar recipe will produce a sugar that is still mostly white and without hardly any plant tastes at all.
I multiplied this recipe by 8 and used an ounce of Blueberry flowers. Decided to follow the qwet process you have on your other post page to do the extraction vs the 10 minute soak. I evaporated mine in a glass pie dish on a 95 degree warming plate until no more alcohol left. The sugar came off the plate in chunks so I put it into a small food processor and pulsed it a few times to bring it back to sugar size particles. The color was more like a very light brown sugar with pinch of green and it smelled fruity. Hardly any hash taste at all, tastes like sugar with a little fruit aftertaste. Better for baking than using cannabutter for some things now my sugar cookies don’t taste like shit. I rate your recipe a 10, thanks for posting it!
I Agree, this works exceptionally well with sugar cookies!
I made this recipe twice to compare, one with the water cured flowers and one with regular stuff. The regular stuff still had a grassy taste to me, the water cured batch didn’t. The water batch also I think came out stronger but that might just be my perception. definitely cleaner though! The water cured stuff looks just like turbinado sugar, golden color no green! its not strong flavored so you can just eat the sugar plain or mix with literally anything. Letting a teaspoon of sugar melt in my mouth gets me all good and toasty!
Glad you like it! Thanks for the comparison!
I would like to know how long you all stirred before the sugar dissolved in the alcohol, as the measurement level of sugar on the side of the beaker has not changed after almost half an hour of agitation. I used organic on one batch and white on the other, same result.
Sugar does not dissolve very readily in high proof ethanol, as the water content is minimal. One way to speed the dissolving of your sugar in the alcohol is to warm the alcohol first. I use a magnetic Hot Plate stirrer set to 100F.
If you prefer to not use heat, another method is to mix the sugar with an equal part of water to form a syrup first then mix this with the alcohol.
Simply adding a small quantity of water to the alcohol we’ll also speed dissolving.
The addition of extra water just extends the evaporation time, the results will still be the same.
You could also use a lower proof alcohol, which will naturally have a higher water content. Just be aware that some additional flavors May transfer to your sugar depending on what you use.
You are a gentleman and a scholar.
Thanks for pointing that out, I failed to include that information in the original write up but I have updated it now.
Why does the sugar need to be dissolved? I thought you just soak up the alcohol by mixing well and then evaporate
The sugar will not “soak up” the alcohol. You can simply mix the sugar and the cannabis laced alcohol together and let it evaporate. What you will end up with is sugar crystals coated with cannabis oil. The method above simply makes for a better mix. Feel free to do whatever you choose.
I mixed sugar and water together then added everclear and mixed up. Poured into a pie plate and set on sunny window ledge for a few hours. Scraped it off and put it into a sandwich bag and smashed it with a skillet so it no so chunky. This shit is fire!!! I put in my morning coffee and also some in my cereal. Best wake and bake! I carry it around in a metal screwtop weed cylinder container for when I need a boost. Question can you do this with salt too? Mahalo from Hawaii!!!
I’m glad you liked it! I have never tried to make cannabis infused salt before, why don’t you give it a whirl and see what happens? Mahalo!
I made mine with Absolute Citron and it has a nice lemony taste to it. I drink tea not coffee so it works out great. I made lemon cookies and sprinkled it on top – amazing! ❤❤❤
I used everclear, sugar and water. Mixed the sugar and water together to make a syrup as suggested. Added the alcohol, mixed and then let it evaporate. Super easy, thanks!
Hi I made a tincture using 16g of flower, mid self, and added 20 oz of everclear. I got 1 cup of tincture and mixed it with 2 &1/2 cups sugar . Any help I can get to figure out how potent my canna sugar is really appreciate!
If you were able to extract, for example, 15% THC from the 16 g of flower, you would end up with approximately 2,400 mg of THC. If infused into 2.5 cups (120 tsp) of sugar, the resulting sugar would contain roughly 20 mg per teaspoon.
This is a rough estimate using a manufactured percentage, it will vary depending on the strain used. If you know the strain, you can get an average concentration from sites like Leafly and use that number in your equation.
Also, please remember this is what is mathematically possible, but may not be what you achieve. The only way to really know is to have your extract tested in a lab or using a home cannabis potency testing device like the tcheck.
Your “Dosing” section has got to be incorrect. The recipe calls for 3.5 grams of cannabis flower and 1/2 cup of sugar. There are 24 teaspoons in 1/2 cup, not 30. I found a cannabis calculator online and was able to verify the approximate dosage for my 1-cup batch. Thanks for the recipe. It took forever (I water cured my flower) but I think it will be worth the end product.
Hi Trish! Thanks for your comment. You are correct in noting that there are only 24 teaspoons in 1/2 a cup – I should clarify that a little better. For this particular batch, I ended up with 30 teaspoons which is what I based my calculations on. I can see now the opportunity for confusion and will make note of that.
Water curing your flower first is truly the best method when making cannasugar, it produces a very clean product that wont adulterate the taste of whatever you use it in. I myself just finished a batch a few days ago. I used it to coat some cannabis infused peanut butter balls that I just made to deliver an extra kick – they are 100% unbelievable! (Recipe coming soon)
Thank you for the reply! I am currently trying to dehydrate my canna sugar mixture. I ended up making a syrup with 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar (for my 7 gram double batch) and now I am doubting myself. Will it turn back into sugar, or will I have to use it as a syrup?
Do not worry, it will turn back to sugar once the liquid has all evaporated 🙂
Omg bro I made this last week after reading this post. Did the water cure step first and I was worried because my sugar didn’t come out green like the pictures I see online. Barely had any smell. I finally had some in my cortada for rhe first time today and it was 🔥🔥🔥
Can I just mix my bubble hash with sugar instead?
You can definitely do that, it just might not dissolve fully.
Made this with Absolut Citron vodka and lemon haze. The sugar has a nice light lemon taste, so not good for coffee but excellent in my tea! Thanks for your recipe. Do you have a guide for doing the extraction with ISO by chance?
Hey Mark, your recipe sounds delicious! I think I’ll try that one and make some infused lemonade!
In regards to your question, we do have a guide on how to make cannabis extract with ISO. You can read about our quick wash method here:https://www.mediblereview.com/quick-wash-iso-extraction-qwiso/
can you do this with salt?
Yes, you can do the same with salt. I have tried it, but I do not think it tastes as good.
Can you grind up some weed into power and use that or do you have to extract the thc first? How about kief from the grinder? Thx
